CARLOS YULO has won it all in gymnastics except one — the Asian Games (Asiad) gold medal.

But the 26-year-old Olympic and world champion will have a chance to complete his golden collection as he spearheads the 14-strong Philippine gymnastics team wading into battle in next month’s Asian Games in Nagoya.

That group included Mr. Yulo’s younger brother Karl Eldrew, who will make his Asiad debut.

Also part of the squad are Juancho Miguel Besana, Justine Ace De Leon, Zachary Cortins Nuñez, Levi Ruivivar, Kylee Kvamme, Chiara Dawn Andrew, Lauren Supnet and Haylee Garcia in artistic gymnastics, Breanna Labadan and Jasmine Althea Ramilo in rhythmic gymnastics, and Jerry Ilano, Jr. and Luvicar Janine Padilla in trampoline gymnastics.

Apart from his double-gold triumph in last year’s Paris Games, Mr. Yulo has also struck gold in the World Championships thrice, Asian Championships 12 times and the Southeast Asian Games nine times.

Shockingly, he has yet to snare one in the Asiad after finishing seventh in the floor exercise despite emerging with the best score in the qualification round of the 2018 edition in Indonesia.

He then had to skip the Hangzhou staging three years ago to focus on the World Championships, which served as a gateway to the Olympics.

Mr. Yulo eventually made it to Paris where he delivered two golds.

Now he sails out to complete unfinished business in the quadrennial continental meet. — Joey Villar
