The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the northeasterly windflow are expected to bring rains over large parts of the Philippines, heightening the risk of flooding and landslides, according to the state weather bureau on Wednesday.
The ITCZ is forecast to cause scattered rains and thunderstorms over Visayas, Mindanao and Palawan in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 5:00 a.m. press briefing.
“We are advising our countrymen from these areas to be cautious as they’ve been experiencing rains in the past few days,” Chenel Dominguez, PAGASA weather specialist, said during the press briefing in Filipino.
The ITCZ is a cloud band formed due to the convergence of trade winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Meanwhile, the northeasterly windflow is likely to cause cloudy skies with rains in Batanes and Cagayan, also posing a risk of flooding and landslides.
In Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, generally fair weather is expected, with chances of localized thunderstorms in the afternoon.
PAGASA has not monitored any low-pressure area or tropical cyclone within the Philippine Area of Responsibility during the forecast period. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
