Just because you work from home doesn’t mean you should ignore sunscreen

IT’S NOT like we’re out in the sun all day anymore, what with work-from-home setups and limited outings, no thanks to this pandemic. Still, sunscreen should continue to be a vital part of our daily skin regimen. In one of their VMV Skinsights Livestreams, VMV Hypoallergenics CEO and Creative Director Laura Verallo de Bertotto and her mother, VMV founding dermapathologist Dr. Vermen M. Verallo-Rowell, discussed the importance of sunscreens.

For one thing, the word “sunscreen” is a bit of a misnomer, and diminishes its importance. “It should be called a sun and light screen,” said Ms. Verallo-Rowell. As we learned in science class, electromagnetic radiation from the sun can be divided into different wavelengths: UVB, UVA, the spectrum of visible light, and infrared radiation. Ms. Verallo-Rowell said that, “We have much more of the visible light indoors.” This includes the blue light emitted by most our gadgets, which due to the pandemic have been in front of our faces for longer periods of time.

On that note, we’re presenting different sunscreen brands that will keep those pesky rays from penetrating your skin, indoors or outdoors. We’ve vetted them to be relatively lightweight, so you can go about your day without your face smelling or looking like you’re at the beach.

ARMADA FACE AND BODY SHIELD 60
We’re starting off with VMV’s own, the Armada Face and Body Shield 60. This claims to have the highest protection against the full spectrum of light: from indoor and outdoor UVA, UVB, Infrared and Visible Light. It also claims that “when used everyday, indoors and out, also helps lighten melasma and other hyperpigmentations.”

GARNIER BRIGHT COMPLETE SUPER UV MATTE SPOT PROOF SUNSCREEN SPF 50+
Garnier’s own player, has added Vitamin C for brightening and lightening, while protecting against light at the same time. The formulation’s matte finish also promises a layer of invisibility, so it can go well under makeup.

BELO SUNEXPERT TRANSPARENT MIST SPF50 (100ML)
Bad ads aside, we stand by this product for feeling and looking like there’s nothing there. It comes in an easy spray format for your body (but spray into your hands for easy application for the face). This offers broad-spectrum protection with Cell Protect technology that “strengthens skin’s defense system” and preventing skin aging.

BELO SUNEXPERT TINTED SUNSCREEN

Another one from Belo, this one can be used as lazy-day makeup, providing a base that looks like there’s nothing there (perfect for Zoom meetings when you want to look prepared and groomed, but not that much). This has Tone Adapt technology that helps even out skin tone, conceal fine lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections, along with the aforementioned Cell Protect technology.

This Japanese standby on many makeup tables lies clear and light on the face, eliminating that cloying feeling one might feel from other sunscreens. The additional Hyaluronic acid can help moisturize the face round-the-clock.
