Ilocos Sur environmental group builds plastic-bottle boat to help fisherfolk

LAOAG CITY —- A “passion project” to address environmental problems turned discarded plastic bottles into a boat to be used by local fisherfolk in Sinait town in Ilocos Sur as an alternative to their fuel-run traditional “bancas.”

Adem Inovejas, a 19-year-old mechanical engineering student, told the Inquirer in an online interview on June 2, that the project aims to help local fisherfolk “in a sense that they can use their plastic trash and turn them into something useful for their livelihood.”

The initiative is the latest project under the youth-led environmental group “Project Blue Ilocos” (Pbi) which Inovejas founded last year at the height of the pandemic.
