Eastern Samar tightens border control vs ASF, bans live pigs, meat

BORONGAN CITY—Eastern Samar tightened border controls to prevent the entry of pigs infected with African swine fever (ASF).

“There is a great need to adopt the precautionary measures to prevent great economic loss and to protect our swine industry,” said Dr. Melanie Osita, ASF provincial coordinator.

Gov. Ben Evardone had issued an executive order to create the Inter-Agency ASF task force to protect the province’s pigs from the virus.

The provincial government also enforced a 60-day ban on the entry of live pigs, processed or cooked meat from Luzon, Leyte, Southern Leyte and countries that have ASF infection records.
