MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as the new Chief Justice to lead the Supreme Court, a Palace official confirmed Friday.
“Yes, as far as I know, yes,” Duterte’s chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo said in a text message to INQUIRER.net.
“As to why he was appointed, first it is his prerogative, and second that is his personal choice,” he added.
Malacaang has yet to release Gesmundo’s appointment paper, as of this writing.
Gesmundo replaces Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta who retired on March 27.
