MANILA, Philippines — The Senate on Wednesday approved on third and final reading the franchise renewal of China-backed Dito Telecommunity, the country’s third telecommunications player.
With 17 affirmative votes, two negative votes, and one abstention, senators approved House Bill No. 7332, which seeks to grant Dito another 25-year franchise.
Dito, which was picked as the country’s third telco in 2018, holds a franchise via Mindanao Islamic Telephone Co. granted in 1998 and set to expire in 2023.
Dito is owned by Davao-based businessman Dennis A. Uy’s Udenna Corp. and state-run China Telecom.
