Caole tops standard girls under-10 chess event – BusinessWorld Online
EMPRESS ANIKA CAOLE added another feather to her cap as she topped the standard girls’ under-10 of the Philippine National Children’s Chess Championship at the Alicia Community Center in Isabela on Thursday.
The nine-year-old chesser from Luna, Apayao downed Lysa Rose Omadto in the fifth and last round to finish with a perfect score of five points in ruling her division and securing a slot to next year’s Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championships.
The feat showed that the three-gold sweep of standard, rapid and blitz in the Philippine National Age Group Championship in Olongapo last June by Ms. Caole, a student of International Master Joel Banawa, was no fluke.
Likewise emerging champions were Labo, Camarines Norte’s Frexine Maria Lim (U8G), Zamboanga City’s Khana Kathrine Ventolero (U12G), Pasig’s Gael Adam Navarro (U8B), Makati’s Marco Piolo Sanido (U10B) and Antipolo’s John Randall Peralta (U12B).
This FIDE-rated event, sanctioned by the NCFP and backed by the PSC, was one of the five the host city under Mayor Joel Amos Alejandro is hosting with the other four being the Women’s Invitational, the National Junior, the Youth Selection and the FIDE Classification tournaments. — Joey Villar
