KIDAPAWAN CITY – Hundreds of motorists and commuters were stranded in the border of Maguindanao and Cotabato provinces as Islamic State-linked gunmen battled with government forces in the town of Datu Paglas.

Major Jun Napat, Tulunan, Cotabato police chief, said the firefight started around 5 a.m. on Saturday (May 8) in Barangay Poblacion, Datu Paglas, Maguindanao.

Napat said that based on reports reaching his office, an estimated 100 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) gunmen trooped to the town center, prompting many residents to flee their homes.
