KASIBU, Nueva Vizcaya — More than 4,000 households across Nueva Vizcaya have gained access to solar lighting under the provincial government’s “Silaw ti Umili” program, helping families in underserved communities light their homes after dark without relying solely on conventional electricity.
Governor Jose V. Gambito launched the third phase of the initiative on Oct. 14 in Barangay Capisaan, Kasibu, distributing free solar panel kits to validated beneficiaries. The rollout extends the program’s reach to more households seeking accessible lighting solutions.
Launched in 2024 with a P20-million budget, the program is implemented by the provincial government in partnership with the Provincial General Services Office, headed by Kathyleen D. Marcelo.
The initiative targets families with limited access to electricity, providing an alternative source of household lighting. For beneficiary families, solar kits can make everyday activities after sunset more manageable, from preparing meals and doing household chores to giving children a better-lit space for evening study. The program also offers households an alternative to conventional lighting sources, although the extent of savings will depend on their existing energy use.
Mr. Gambito said the provincial government would continue expanding the program to reach more communities across Nueva Vizcaya. By extending access to solar lighting, the province aims to improve living conditions for underserved families and bring practical benefits of renewable energy to more households. — Artemio A.
