THE Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said it is working with Discord for the implementation of safety measures to monitor and address nihilistic violent extremists on the platform.

In a media release on Wednesday, the agency said Philippine authorities met with Discord to explore ways the government and the platform can collaborate in identifying and tracking malicious actors operating online.

“They also tackled measures to monitor and address nihilistic violent extremists on the popular platform, with the goal of strengthening efforts to protect young people and improve online safety,” the agency said.

Last month, the DICT, through the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, temporarily blocked access to Discord due to security concerns as Philippine authorities crack down on online platforms following a series of fatal school shootings.

The agency then lifted a ban on the platform following its commitment to work with the government on the implementation of stronger safety measures.

Meanwhile, ICT Secretary Henry Rhoel R. Aguda said he remains the secretary of the agency following reports that he resigned from his position.

“I am aware of the reports circulating regarding my position as secretary of the DICT. At this time, I remain focused on carrying out my responsibilities and ensuring the continuity of the department’s work,” he said.

Mr. Aguda said he will continue to focus on regional engagements on technology as the Philippines hosts Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.

“As secretary of DICT, I serve at the pleasure of the President, and fully recognize and respect the President’s prerogative in matters concerning his Cabinet and his administration,” Mr. Aguda said. — Ashley Erika O. Jose
