THE Alas Pilipinas Girls aim to write more history by gatecrashing into the Round of 16 of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship in San Felipe, Chile.

The Filipinos have already accomplished some firsts after pulling off a pair of triumphs at the expense of the Mexicans and the Tunisians in their first three matches to zoom to second in Pool B.

Their only defeat came against the Chinese, the defending champions currently carrying an unblemished 3-0 record.

To advance though, the Nationals would have to win at least once in their last two outings in the group stage — one versus the Peruvians being played as of this writing or against the Venezuelans on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Philippines leapt 12 rungs up from No. 65 to No. 53 after snaring the silver medal in the SEA V Cup Leg 2 in Chiang Mai, Thailand — its best finish in the annual tilt — last Sunday.

The Alas Women finished with a 2-1 slate in Chiang Mai following triumphs over the Vietnamese and the Indonesians.

PNVF ELECTIONSThe Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) on Monday elected Frank Lao of Strong Group Athletics as its new president in polls done at the Solaire. Also elected were Donn Kapunan as vice-president, Rommel Ng as treasurer, former PNVF chief Ramon Suzara, Sienna Olaso, Francis Chad Salimbangon, Carmela Gamboa, Rustico Camangian, Mohamad Bernan, Jr. and Jonas Cabochan as board of directors.

Don Caringal was appointed secretary-general while the other two board seats will go to someone who will be male and female athlete representatives.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham N. Tolentino said they have relinquished the “caretaker” status of the national team and returned it to the PNVF. — Joey Villar
