THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an international charity to make welfare and psychosocial care services more accessible for Filipino seafarers and their families.

The DMW partnered with the Mission to Seafarers (MTS), a global Christian charity group aiding people who work at sea, under the MoU signed by DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac and Ben Bailey, the director of program for MTS, at the DMW Central Office on Tuesday.

DMW Undersecretary Felicitas Q. Bay and MTS Country Manager Lailani Tolentino-Rahon acted as witnesses.

Alongside more accessible welfare services, DMW said in statement on Wednesday that the MoU also improves systems for case referrals and information sharing regarding the rights and welfare of all Filipino seafarers, including overseas Filipino workers.

The MoU is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s directive to institute stronger protections and support for seafarers, the DMW said. — Francessca S. Abalos
