National University (NU) after sitting out last year’s competition, swept first round of the UAAP Season 81 men’s lawn tennis tournament eating defending champion’s University of the East (UE) lunch money, 4-1 over the weekend. The Bulldogs are unbeaten in six ties.
Additionally, Ateneo de Manila University, finished second to NU in the first round, brushed its weekend ties with similar 5-0 victories over University of the Philippines (UP) and Adamson University.
Ateneo now has a 5-2 record together with University of Santo Tomas (UST), who shattered De La Salle University on successive days, 4-1, bridging the end of first round towards the start of the second round.
UE Red Warriors, meanwhile, recovered from Saturday’s forfeiture to the Bulldogs with a 3-2 beating of the Fighting Maroons Sunday to move at 4-3 in solo fourth. UP fell out of favor with 3-4.
In women’s, La Salle halted back the advanced of cup holder UST, 4-1, to rule the first round with three wins and a loss. Lady Eagles bested the Lady Bulldogs, 3-2, to clutch solo second with a 3-2 card, while UST Tigresses recoiled back from last Saturday’s defeat to the Lady Archers with a 4-1 romp of the Lady Maroons. Lastly, UST enforced a three-way tie for third place with NU and UP at 2-3.
