UAAP: NU clobbers Ateneo to sweep baseball juniors in the first round

National University (NU) got a revenge measure in the UAAP Season 82 junior baseball tournament against defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.

This was the first time since the Season 81 finals that the Bullpups and the Blue Eaglets faced off, seeing the latter sweep the crown’s then-top seeded team.

In the third inning, the Bullpups scored four runs to overcome a 0-1 void, before adding four more runs to complete the route in the sixth.

Catcher Julius Soriano finished off at-bats with a whopping three hits in four, bringing in the process in three runs. On the defensive side, as the relief pitcher Regie Omana dismissed these hitters, he accumulated seven putouts.

Omana also limited the Blue Eaglets to only four hits from the last five innings, leading to the scoreless stint of the defending champions after an early 1-0 lead. Captain of Ateneo Keane Agcaoili recorded the lone run of Ateneo following a double ground-rule of Matthew San Juan.

On the other side, in the first game of the day, 12-2 in six innings, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) also dominated De La Salle-Zobel to barge into the win column.

In the first and sixth inning, the Junior Golden Sox capitalized on the Junior Green Batters ‘ errors to score two unearned runs in either of these frames.

After a seven-run binge in the sixth inning, UST’s lead ballooned to 10. With two hits and two RBIs in four at-bats, Kenth Porras scored UST’s first win, while Justine Rosales scored a triple in the third inning to finally score the first of his two runs in the game.

The Junior Green Batters scored both of their runs in Charlie Calvadores and Jose Dunglao’s third frame to narrow the gap to two, 2-4, but John Ado kept La Salle scoreless from the fourth inning, including two strikeouts.
