Reigning 3-time champion Ateneo flexed his muscle on Thursday at the Trace Aquatic Center in Los Baños on Day 1 of the UAAP Season 82 women’s swimming.
Last year’s Most Valuable Player, Chloe Daos, led the Lady Eagles with golds in the two days, 100-meter and 800-meter freestyle events. The two relay mints were also bagged by Ateneo to earn 101 points on the day.
Daos bested the Philippine University’s Erin Castrillo and La Salle’s Nicole Pamintuan for the 100-meter title at 59.54 seconds. In the 800 meters ahead of La Salle’s Nichole Evangelista and teammate Reagan Gavino, the third-year Atenean also bagged silver.
In a 200-meter medley relay, the Lady Eagles ended the dominance of Lady Maroons as Courtney Gray, Dara Carreon, Kristine Santos, and Marjorie Manguiat edged UP with a time of 2 minutes, 8.15 seconds.
With Suzanne Himor, Gavino, Gray, and Portia Doragos grabbing gold (9:17.41), Ateneo extended his winning run in the 800-meter freestyle relay. The silver was also given to the Lady Maroons.
On the men’s side, after bagging the golds in both the 100 and 800-meter freestyle events, Ilustre, the top rookie of the previous season, made a case for the Most Valuable Player plum of this season to bring the title favorites up at 77 points.
Ilustre overtook Ateneo’s Miguel Barlisan and Santo Tomas University’s Christian Anor with a time of 52.07 seconds in the 100 meters, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Barlisan.
