Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) chairman Al Panlilio announced on Monday evening that Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone will coach the Gilas Pilipinas national team that will compete in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Cone, the winning coach in PBA history, has emerged as the top option as he has both the respect of the entire basketball society in the Philippines and the chops in just a few weeks to create a squad into a cohesive unit.
Panlilio added that he respected the decision of Cone to speak with his family first as he knows that Cone’s family will have to make sacrifices because of the massive responsibility.
Cone recognized that while his appointment was a “stop measure and a short-term engagement,” he is still honored to be selected for the SEA Games as the Gilas head coach.
Panlilio said San Miguel Corporation president Ramon S. Ang and sports director Alfrancis Chua had already provided Cone the go-ahead.
The chairman of the SBP made it clear that the agreement is only for the SEA Games in November and December, which the nation will host.
The team composition and the coaching employees of Cone will be discussed in the near future.
