Pedicab driver Roger Herrero who survived being shot by police in Quezon province last year was re-arrested without warrant Friday. Herrero was allegedly seized by police in November 2018 and was enforced to admit to a string of robbery cases in Agdangan, Quezon. He was shot in the face by his captors, but was able to survive despite a shattered jaw.
Human rights lawyer and senatorial candidate Chel Diokno who also chairs the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) said in a statement, “Just this afternoon, while attending a hearing in the Lucena Prosecutor’s Office in compliance with a subpoena, the Agdangan police arrested him without a warrant. His life is now in jeopardy for the second time,”
“I call upon Philippine National Police Chief Oscar Albayalde to ensure the safety of Roger Herrero while he is under custody and to see to it that he is immediately released,” he added.
In time of reporting, Albayalde and the Quezon police have yet to reply about the incident.
The National Bureau of Investigation pressed murder charges against the police officers involved in the case.
