MANILA – The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will temporarily suspend its operations for four weeks to speed up the construction and rail replacements of the rail transit service.
The suspension of operation will be stretched into four weekends and will cover the following dates: July 4 and 5, August 8 and 9, August 21 and 23, and September 12 and 13.
The MRT-3 management said on a twitter post that the rail replacement that will be done during the weekend are turnout works for both northbound and southbound stations. These turnouts are used to give trains the capability to switch from one track to another.
In order to compensate for the lack of train services during these weekends, the MRT-3 bus augmentation program will be implemented, in cooperation with the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to ensure the ferrying of commuters plying Edsa.
During this suspension period, MRT-3 maintenance provider Sumitomo-MHI will also be conducting rail de-stressing, rerailing, turnouts replacement, ballasting, and tamping, and rail profile grinding for MRT’s train and electrical systems.
Once the maintenance has been completed, the MRT-3’s train operating speed is expected to increase speed from 40 kilometers per hour (kph) to 60 kph and time between trains to decrease to 3.5 minutes waiting time.
The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) serves more than half a million commuters daily.
