MILF vice chairman Ghazali Jaafar dies at 75

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) vice chairman Ghazali Jaafar died in a hospital in Davao City early Wednesday. The leader of the country’s one-time largest rebel group was 75.

Jaafar passed away minutes after 1 a.m. after weeks at the hospital, his son Johari Abo described. Jaafar last year had an angioplasty and suffered complications in the abdomen thereafter, leading to recurrent check-ups and hospital confinement, attested by MILF chairman Murad Ebrahim.

Jaafar earlier this week grumbled of abdominal pain and was rushed to intensive care. Murad added that his comrade was detected with a kidney problem and toxins had spread in his body early Wednesday.

Jaafar’s passing came less than 2 months after a January vote sanctioned the formation of a new southern region that gives the Muslim minority wider powers.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is the result of decades-long intercession between the government and MILF.

“He is one of the pillars of the leadership of the MILF in the Bangsamoro struggle,” Murad siad.

“We consider him as a big loss to the leadership of the MILF and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,” he added.

Jaafar was not able to attend the turnover ceremony of the ARMM to BARMM last February.

The deceased will be brought to his family’s farm in Barangay Pigkalagan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, his son concluded.
