Magnitude 5.9 temblor jolts Bukidnon

Provincial disaster and risk reduction officers submitted initial reports on the damage caused by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the province of Bukidnon at 9:23 a.m. on Monday, November 18.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Kadingilan city in Bukidnon was the epicenter. At 4:04 am on Tuesday, November 19, Phivolcs reported 33 aftershocks. Sheen Therese Romo, director of Kadingilan municipal disaster risk reduction, said four people were injured during the quake.

Romo said Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) teams, along with the Fire Protection, Police and 88th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Maramag, Bukidnon, were deployed to all 17 barangays.

At 9 am, the number of households registered in the various barangays in Kadingilan was: Salvacion-14 households; Husayan-7 households; Malinao-11 households; Sibonga-56 households; Kibogtok-7 households; Baroy-5 households.

Romo added that in both public and private schools, classes were suspended at all levels, but work in government offices remained open.

We have told our people to go to open fields in order to avoid injuries if there are aftershocks, Romo said.

Lieutenant Colonel Surkie Sereñas said the damage assessment was performed by the CDRRMO and the city police in Valencia City, Bukidnon, City Police Chief.

Sereñas said in a text message: Please be told that CDRRMO and Valencia CPS initially found the following details in the rapid damage assessment:

Esther Hospital located on Sayre Highway, Lumbo, Valencia City has incurred cracks, patients have been evacuated outside, injury monitoring on the way; two houses – one in Brgy Tugaya and one in Brgy Laligan – have sustained partial damage but no one has been injured; Lumbo Elementary School has incurred cracks; Sinabuagan Elementary School has slight cracks, Building cracks caused by the Tongan-Tongan elementary school administration. In Maramag, Dangcagan, Kitaotao, Quezon, Kalilangan, Kadingilan and Valencia City, Hamsel Echavez, Provincial Public Affairs Information and Assistance Administrative Officer, said classes were suspended at all grades.
