After dominating the UP Fighting Maroons, 89-63 Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Ateneo Blue Eagles finished their first-round sweep.
Another third-quarter bomb was triggered by the Katipunan-based team, making 25 points against UP’s 15 to finish the period at 61-46. After UP head coach Bo Perasol was thrown out of the match, 6:23 in the third period after going toe-toe with the referees, the momentum changed to the defending champs.
UP finished the first period with an 8-0 run to take the lead, 21-15, but in the second period, the Eagles came back to finish the first half at 35-31.
In the face-off of the UAAP Season 81 finalists, five Eagles scored in double digits. 19 points and 15 rebounds were recorded by Angelo Kouame. Matt Nieto scored 18, Will Navarro scored 14, Thirdy Ravena scored 13, while SJ Belangel scored 11.
Kobe Paras finished with 15 points for UP while Javi Gomez de Liaño and Jun Manzo respectively gave 14 and 12 points.
The Eagles finish the first round at the top of the standings with the victory, while UP remains with a 5-2 record at the second.
