Family, colleagues pay respects to former Senator Nene Pimentel

Friends and colleagues of the late President of the Senate, Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr., went to Heritage Park in Taguig City on Sunday to pay their respects.

A mass took place at 9 p.m. Assisted by Pimentel’s relatives and friends, Bam Alegre spoke to GMA News ‘ Unang Balita on Monday.

Among those who followed were former Senator Francisco “Kit” Tatad, who had previously worked with Pimentel in the Senate, and Amina Rasul, sister of late Senator Nina Rasul, Pimentel’s former colleague in the Senate.

Senator Bong Revilla and his mother, Bacoor Mayor Lani Mercado, were also present.

Revilla said that he looked up to Pimentel as his uncle in the Senate, as he worked as a legislator at the same time as his own son, former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr., did.

Senator Francis Tolentino was also there and said he found Pimentel his “personal lawyer.” Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Pimentel was a huge loss in their campaign to promote federalism.

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said that he kept Pimentel in high regard even when he was just beginning his own career in politics and that he entered the PDP-Laban party in 1992.

Former Chief Justice Reynato Puno recalled Pimentel’s wisdom and said, “It was a major influence. In places where we can not agree, we still try his wise advice.” Vice President Leni Robredo shared her condolences and expressed gratitude for Pimentel’s legacy of local governance and human rights, in particular, his stand against martial law imposed by former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Pimentel died on Sunday morning at the age of 85 after fighting lymphoma and pneumonia.

The wake will be held in Heritage Park until Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, 23 October, Pimentel’s wake will be moved to the Senate of the Philippines in Pasay City.

Pimentel’s remains will be taken to the Cagayan de Oro City Hall in the afternoon of Wednesday, October 23, and will remain there until Friday morning, October 25.

The remains of Pimentel will be returned to Heritage Park on Friday afternoon.

The date for the interment will be confirmed later by the family.
