President Rodrigo Duterte returned to Manila on Monday after spending the weekend in Davao City, in the midst of government plans for a potential dangerous eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, who accompanied the President during the flight, said they were the first to land at Manila airport suspending arrivals and departures due to security concerns following Taal’s Sunday ash explosion.

Panelo said that Duterte had “given instructions to take the necessary steps to get citizens out of the danger zone within the perimeter of Taal.” According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Science, the Palace official also urged the public “to continue to be alert.” Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 4 on Monday in the midst of the ongoing “period of intense unrest.”

Alert level 4 means “hazardous explosive eruption” will occur in hours to days.
