DOLE to waive recruiters ‘ licenses to send minors as OFWs

Department of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III warns recruitment organizations by faking the ages of the victims against sending minors to work overseas.

Bello’s stern warning came after he was informed that Saudi Arabia was only 17 years old, one of the 83 repatriated OFWs from the Riyadh early last week.

She was only over 15 years old when she was sent to Saudi Arabia to work as a family service employee, according to the victim (recognized only as Tanya).

She stated that she had been made to work for a cruel employer who had not paid her wage and ordered her to sleep three weeks on the rooftop.

The batch of 82 distressed OFWs who arrived at the Bahay Kalinga in Riyadh last Monday, September 23, sought shelter before being repatriated.

OWWA owes repatriates ‘ travel expenses to Bahay Kalinga, the halfway house of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office.
