The Foreign Affairs Department said that despite ongoing mass protests, there is no need to evacuate the more than 370,000 Filipino workers in Hong Kong.
To Filipino jobs in Asia, Hong Kong is a major destination. There is a plurality of Filipinos serving as domestic assistants.
The protests in Hong Kong in 2019 are an ongoing series of mass actions throughout the Chinese territory, triggered by a controversial extradition bill that would allow extradition to China.
With this incident, the DFA advised Hong Kong’s Filipinos to “stay alert and avoid areas of protest, and refrain from wearing or carrying anything that might mistakenly identify them as part of the protest action.”
However, the DFA said it saw “no need to evacuate them at this time.”
