This week, the government launched a tracking system that would allow recipients to track their deliveries through different clearance phases, ahead of the expected inflow during the yuletide season.

In an e-mailed release, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced that it had released the Parcel and Balikbayan Box Tracking System (PBTS) on Wednesday, 30 October.

Accessible via the BOC website, the tracking system updates the parcel or balikbayan box as it passes through the different stages of customs clearance.

Many of the OFWs are expected to send balikbayan boxes and packages to their loved ones here in the Philippines during this time.

Signed by former President Benigno Aquino III in May 2016, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) introduced a number of reforms, such as the digital sorting of imports, streamlining of export and import procedures, and streamlined processes for the capture and disposal of illegal goods.

The latest available data shows that the collection of BOCs rose by 13 percent to P59,209 billion in September of this year, on the back of higher taxes raised in the light of the tax reform initiatives.
