Cebu City health capacity near critical level, says Department of Health


CEBU CITY – As Cebu City now becomes a new hotspot for Covid-19 cases, the health facilities in the city are now near a critical level.

Department of Health Spokesperson Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire said that 61 of its 80 barangays reported new cases in the past two weeks and 50-80% of the hospital beds and mechanical ventilators are already being used.

Vergeire revealed that the reason why the city was under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) is because of the critical care utilization rate of the city is now on a danger zone and  IATF (Interagency Task Force) have to make sure the system is not overwhelmed.

The Department of Health is monitoring the implementations of protocols and social distancing of the residents that could contribute to the rise of Covid-19 infections in the city. DOH will release its report next week.

Central Visayas police director Albert Ignatius Ferro confirmed that police forces will strictly enforce quarantine operations and monitoring to curb the spread of the virus. Bureau of  Fire Protection and barangay officials are also on standby to support the measures that will be implemented.

Special Action Force commandos arrived yesterday, they will support the almost 2,000 uniformed personnel deployed in Cebu City being deployed to enforce city-wide lockdown.

Cebu City has recorded 95 new cases and 17 deaths due to COVID-19 yesterday. The total cases of infection are now at 4,702 with 136 fatalities.
