The Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III was concerned with Filipino seafarers ‘ abduction cases in Africa.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday that two more Filipino sailors were abducted by pirates in West Africa.
A week after nine Philippine seafarers were abducted in the neighboring African state of Benin, the Filipinos were kidnapped in Togo.
This latest incident brings the total number of Filipinos in West Africa hostage to 11.
The DFA “actively monitored” developments in the abductions, with the Nigerian embassy continuing to work with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Filipino seafarers.
Piracy and ransom kidnappings of Filipino sailors by pirates in the dangerous waters of Africa have long been a concern for the government of the Philippines, which lacked the ability to track their movements at sea.
The Philippines is one of the world’s largest providers of shipping workers.
