Ateneo de Manila University finished the elimination round with a perfect 14-0 record following the quick work of the University of the Philippines, 86-64, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
With the win, the two-time defending champion Blue Eagles scored an automatic ticket to the finals of the basketball tournament, leaving the Fighting Maroons to fight it out with the Far Eastern University and the University of Santo Tomas in a step-ladder format.
Center Ange Kouame scored 20 points in the season and grabbed 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard SJ Sorgel scored 14 points. Will Navarro and Thirdy Ravena have contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, to Ateneo’s balanced attack.
Kobe Paras finished the scoring parade with 13 points, while star center Bright Akhuetie was limited to 11.
UP ended the elimination round with a losing record of 9-5 wins, great for the second seed.
This ensures that the Tamaraws and the Growling Tigers will first meet in the elimination game. The winner must fight UP for the right to take advantage of Ateneo in the finals, while the Maroons will take advantage of it twice.
