5 high school students killed, six others injured in a van-truck collision in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental

Five public high school students from Basay town in Negros Oriental perished in an accident while with five other students and a teacher were only injured in a collision between a van and a cargo truck in the town of Zamboanguita part of Negros Oriental last Friday, March 1st.

According to the Zamboanguita police incident, the van with 15 passengers on board and driven by a Jaypee Sarad, 29, was passing through the road in Barangay Mayabon in Zamboanguita around 6 a.m. of Friday when the vehicle abruptly swerved over to the opposite lane due to slippery road and collided with the incoming cargo truck driven by Elpedio Delos Santos Jr. which resulted in the unfortunate deaths and injuries.

A report released by the Department of Education (DepEd) of Bayawan City, said the tragic incident claimed the lives of 11th graders and 7th student. The bodies of the victims are now at a funeral near Dumaguete City and will be brought to their residences for internment.

DepEd Bayawan and a report from the Zamboanguita police identified the injured and are now currently confined in two hospitals in Dumaguete City. While four other injured persons were still to be identified, according to the Zamboanguita police report.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the very unfortunate vehicular accident that happened early morning of March 1, 2019 involving 10 students and a teacher-coach of Basay National High School,” police statement said.

“The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Schools Division of Bayawan City and the Regional Office, is closely coordinating and assisting with the families of the victims as of press time,” the statement added.

“DepEd extends its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and is committed to provide adequate support in this most difficult time,” the statement concluded.
